The U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System database is a very handy tool for fiction and non-fiction writing, journalism, genealogy and family history research. Search a term/name by state and by county. You may never need to find wells or slopes, but think of how useful to be able to find cemeteries, historic churches and places that were named for your characters or your ancestors.
